Trauma Sensitive Yoga Classes Melbourne

Allow a safe space for yourself to develop greater tolerance of physical and sensory fear experiences and increase emotional awareness by creating safety and comfort within one's body.

Trauma sensitive yoga focuses on the body and breath as a way to connect to the physical self after the disconnection that can be experienced post traumatic event(s). This modified approach to yoga develops interoceptive skills and draws attention to the present, asking clients to notice sensations, emotions and breath through somatic exercises in a safe and monitored environment.

Research has also shown positive effects of complementary approaches like yoga and meditation in addition to therapeutic approaches in helping individuals to process, integrate and heal from trauma experiences.

What is Trauma Sensitive Yoga?

Cass Dorian

TRAUMA INFORMED YOGA TEACHER

Cass is a qualified yoga teacher and practice manager of the psychology clinic here at Insight. She completed her trauma informed training with 'Collective Being' and believes all yoga should be trauma informed. Cass aims to provide a friendly and safe environment for her clients to reconnect with their bodies and breath.

Trauma sensitive yoga is an approach to yoga practice that prioritises creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals with trauma histories. It recognises the potential triggers and challenges that can arise during traditional yoga classes and adapts the practice to be more mindful of these sensitivities through emphasis on choice and empowerment, allowing participants to make decisions about their practice based on their comfort levels.

Sessions focus on body awareness, grounding techniques, and gentle movement to foster a sense of safety and connection to the body. It asks individuals to explore, rather than expect, certain things from our bodies during practice. The aim of trauma-sensitive yoga is to facilitate healing, build resilience, and help individuals restore a positive relationship with their bodies after experiencing trauma.

Clients will leave with a tool kit of somatic techniques to draw on in everyday life including breathwork, movement and mindfulness strategies.

The 6-week yoga program is delivered in a small groups or clients also have the option of one-off 1:1 sessions. Both allow a safe space for clients to develop greater tolerance of physical and sensory fear experiences and increase emotional awareness by creating safety and comfort within one's body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Trauma Sensitive Yoga right for me?

Trauma sensitive yoga is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced trauma and struggle to connect with their physical body. It may be especially helpful for people with PTSD and c-PTSD, chronic pain or stress, body dysmorphia and for survivors of physical, emotional or sexual assault or abuse.

It may help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, dissociation and flashbacks.

Why a 6 week program and not just one-off sessions?

A 6-week trauma-sensitive yoga program offers distinct benefits compared to one-off group sessions. The extended duration enhances predictability and consistency, nurtures a sense of safety and allows individuals to become more acquainted with the practice, the instructor, and their fellow participants.

As a sense of safety and trust deepens, there may be a greater willingness to explore movements and sensations that might have initially triggered discomfort. This structured progression promotes a reduction in symptoms over time and enables deeper healing and lasting positive changes.carefully curated to promote healing, self-awareness, and personal empowerment.
