What is Trauma Sensitive Yoga?

Trauma sensitive yoga is an approach to yoga practice that prioritises creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals with trauma histories.

It recognises the potential triggers and challenges that can arise during traditional yoga classes and adapts the practice to be more mindful of these sensitivities through emphasis on choice and empowerment, allowing participants to make decisions about their practice based on their comfort levels.

Sessions focus on body awareness, grounding techniques, and gentle movement to foster a sense of safety and connection to the body. It asks individuals to explore, rather than expect, certain things from our bodies during practice. The aim of trauma-sensitive yoga is to facilitate healing, build resilience, and help individuals restore a positive relationship with their bodies after experiencing trauma.

Clients will leave with a tool kit of somatic techniques to draw on in everyday life including breathwork, movement and mindfulness strategies.

The 6-week yoga program is delivered in a small groups or clients also have the option of one-off 1:1 sessions. Both allow a safe space for clients to develop greater tolerance of physical and sensory fear experiences and increase emotional awareness by creating safety and comfort within one's body.

Trauma sensitive yoga is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced trauma and struggle to connect with their physical body. It may be especially helpful for people with PTSD and c-PTSD, chronic pain or stress, body dysmorphia and for survivors of physical, emotional or sexual assault or abuse.

It may help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, dissociation and flashbacks.

Why a 6 week program and not just one-off sessions?
